Fridge slide, drawer and storage system

Ok haven’t finished my project yet but here’s what I’ve done so far . The fridge slide is all done and works great. It has a heavy duty runner that extends a fair bit out in 2 stages. The base it all goes on and bolts down is done and the storage box/drawer is done and the outside of the drawer. The box has handles on both end and a lockable lid. I will be scrapping the cheap runners I bought for it and getting another set of heavy duty runners like the other. Still to carpet the outside and the side storage is still to be done which will house the second battery and charger aswell as I will wire up multiple 12volt sockets and a switch and the 240volt inverter. Also plan on doing a little bit of lighting in and around. Thinking also of putting subwoofer and amp in there somewhere.

Geocaching

Stumbled upon a new hobby I’m going to get into called geocaching. Basically it’s a worldwide treasure hunt that you can do when your out and about using a gps and a little puzzle solving to find the cache (treasure aar the booty).

When you find a cache depending on the type you can lodge a find and take an item from the cache and put on back in. Sounds nerdy but fun if you into getting outside. Great for kids I reckon .

The trick is tho you can’t let other people see you when you are finding a cache because someone might not get why it’s there and remove or destroy it and there goes the fun. For more info goto geocaching.com OR geocaching.com.au (Aussie)
Both websites are not affiliated with each other but the aus one does update logs from caches from the yank site (sorry geocaching.com groundspeek site)

In the meantime I’m building a fridge slide to go in the back of the zook with storage underneath for the 28ah agm battery I got for $30 off eBay (would run fridge for at least 30+hrs , since the 65ah battery pack I have runs my dads engel 38ltr eclipse model easily for 3 days non stop (70+hrs without hitting full drain).
The agm battery is sealed and deep cycle so I can charge in car while driving (mounted sideways even) also it doesn’t mind a full discharge unlike a standard battery. Also it’s not huge so won’t take up alot of space but it does weigh 9kg because of the thicker lead plates inside.
Great way of setting up dual battery in a modern 4wd with no room under the hood for 2 batteries for lights, fridge, cb radio, anything you want to run seperate to your main battery which can be important if you are away from civilisation and a jump start :p .

Will be posting pics and descriptions of how I went about things when done at end of week.

2 DAYS TIL HOLIDAYS

Yay only 2 more days then I’m off! Haven’t planned yet where or exactly when but I plan on making the most of the next 3 weeks off work. No customers, No budgets, No getting up to an alarm clock! I’m seriously thinking of getting a handheld gps unit from garmin like the etrex (cheaper more affordable version) or going for a top notch version like the 60csx with maps. Will come in handy off down 4wd tracks and if I do scoot off across the country least I can find my way back to civilisation if I get lost trying to find a waterfall or some remote cave (bear grylls style). It all comes down to money tho . Registration looming on the zook and a service when I get back makes me think I might have to go the lesser of the two. Maybe it’s time to do a rummage for some old stuff I don’t use anymore to sell off on eBay or pawn store.

I ended up getting the garmin 60csx.
Put shonkymaps topo maps on it for now till I get the garmin ones. Will see how it fairs when I head out bush.
- update – the Garmin topo maps are great + well worth getting especially because the roads tracks are routable.

Installing Uhf radio into GV 2008

Ok heres a rough description of how i went about installing the UHF radio.

Firstly u will need to have wire cutter/strippers crimper. Some decent guage wiring 10amp should be fine. UHF radio – i went with the gme 3440 because of the remote head , an aerial and bracket to mount all these can be found at UHF store or autobarn/supercheap auto etc..You will need some electical tape and some split tube a socket set and some spanners.U will also need some wire connectors and a fusebox (or single fuse if prefer)

Anyways you first disconnect the negative terminal on the battery (i upgraded my battery to a ultra performance type at the same time) i then poked a hole thru the grommet in the engine bay to feed all my wiring and aerial cable into the cabin. i ran the 12volt positive wiring thru and a negative wire also thru (plus aerial cable) then i proceeded to mount the aerial on the side of the engine bay (i had to bend the bracket to a different shape in order to mount it and bolted it to the car then attached the aerial.

I then attached wire connectors on the + and – wiring i ran thru to connect to battery. ( dont connect just yet).. then i installed the uhf and fusebox on the plastic bit under the drivers side as seen in photos. It fit perfectly on there.

Then i put wire connectors on the end of the wiring and also ran some wiring from the fusebox to the radio. anyways u get the idea (fusebox in between)

Connect the aerial and wiring (no fuse in box just yet i do this very last)

Then connect the wiring to the battery (reconnecting the battery)

Place split tube all over wiring to protect it (also looks tidy that way)

Then place the fuse back in and tested the radio.

Thats about it really wasnt hard. Just have to be careful not to damage anything.

Heres pics of final setup.

Recent upgrade – Uhf radio

Recently i decided to add a uhf radio to the GV .. the install was actually pretty easy , i ran the power directly from the battery into the cabin with a 4 point fuse box (for future projects) .. the model i got was a gme 3440, its alot easier to put into modern 4wd’s it sits under the dash and all the controls are on the mic.

Will add a walkthrough with pics of how i went about it later.

This is pic i took outside warnambool near the beach, it shows how i mounted the antenna since i dont have a bullbar or nudgebar yet.

Future plans are a 2″lift in suspension, larger AT tyres for hitting the trails, a tow hitch, roof rack and basket. Then here i come Kimberleys (well one day) first be trip up the Grampians.
